Happy Thursday y’all! Woop woop, it’s almost the weekend! So, I follow lots of authors on Instagram and some of them follow me back, so I was so excited when Alicia J Novo, the author of Unwritten reached out to me to review it! The summary for Unwritten was so cool, so I was so excited to read it!
Unwritten 4/5 Stars
Summary from Goodreads:
Books whisper to Beatrix Alba. But they aren’t the reason she has never fit in. Bullied at home and school, she keeps a secret—a power of violence and darkness.
When the spell that keeps her hidden fails, she’s catapulted into the Zweeshen, a realm where all tales live, and her dream of meeting her favorite characters comes true. But wishes are tricky, and behind its wonder and whimsy, the Zweeshen is under attack. A character is burning bookworlds in pursuit of a weapon to rule both stories and storytellers. To succeed, he needs a riddle in Beatrix’s keeping.
Now he’s hunting her down.
Joining forces with William, a cursed conjurer, Beatrix must face an enemy who knows her every weakness in a realm where witches play with time, Egyptian gods roam, and Regency heroines lead covert operations. And with her darkness as the only weapon, she may have to sacrifice everything to save a world that rejects her.
The concept behind Unwritten was so interesting! I love the idea of Zweeshen and having there be a realm where all characters reside. That sounds so, so cool! I feel like the beginning of the book was a little rushed and I didn’t really feel like I connected with Beatrix until after she had been in Zweeshen for a little while. Also, I was a little confused about her Furie and what it was/how it worked and why it was such a big deal. I really enjoyed all of the supporting characters- Emma was adorable, Cassandra was so much fun, and I really liked William even though it took Beatrix a while to warm up to him. Their romantic relationship seemed a little rushed, but their friendship seemed like it was at a great pace. I really liked the general overall plot (although in some sections the execution was not my favorite) and that made Unwritten a fun and enjoyable read and I’m excited to see where Novo takes the rest of this series. Definitely a really interesting take on fantasy that I’ve never read before! Unwritten comes out on May 8th, so make sure you go check it out! Amazon|Barnes and Noble|Indiebound|Alicia Novo’s Website
