Review: The Twelve Dogs of Christmas by Lizzie Shane

Thank you so much to Forever for being such an amazing publishing house and for being so great to your bloggers and sending me all three of the Pine Hollow books by Lizzie Shane ❤ (I love Estelle and Dana- they’re really the best!) I was so excited to read them because they combine two of my favorite things- small town contemporary romances and dogs! What else could you ask for in a book???

The Twelve Dogs of Christmas 4.5/5 Stars

Summary from Goodreads:

A delightful holiday romance about a small-town single dad and an animal rescue owner as they try to find forever homes for a dozen lovable pups before Christmas.

Pine Hollow has everything Ally Gilmore could wish for in a holiday break: gently falling snow in a charming small town and time with her family. Then she learns some Grinch has pulled the funding for her family’s rescue shelter, and now she has only four weeks to find new homes for a dozen dogs! But when she confronts her Scroogey councilman nemesis, Ally finds he’s far more reasonable — and handsome — than she ever expected.

As the guardian of his dog-obsessed ten-year-old niece, Ben West doesn’t have time to build a cuddly reputation. But he does feel guilty about the shelter closing. So he proposes a truce with Ally, agreeing to help her adopt out the pups. As the two spend more time together, the town’s gossip is spreading faster than Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. And soon Ben is hoping he can convince Ally that Pine Hollow is her home for the holidays… and the whole year through.

Awww I read this book right around Christmas (I think I started it on/around Christmas eve and finished it on the day after Christmas since I had no time to read during Christmas) and it was so cute! I loved the characters and the town of Pine Hollow so much. Ally and Ben were great and I really love how much Ben cared for Astrid- I’m sure it’s a huge shock to become your eight year old niece’s guardian after your sister and brother in law die, plus to do it when she’s already so grown? And to do it by yourself? That’s a lot for anybody to take on! I loved being able to understand Ally and Ben’s personalities equally- you know how sometimes in romance novels, you only really get a good feel for one of the characters and not the other one? Yeah Lizzie Shane definitely does not do that at all. You know both of them really well. Plus, you’re also introduced to other characters that are going to be the basis for the rest of the books in the series, which I loved, because I love a good contemporary romance series. Pacing wise and plot wise, most of the time I loved everything, but I took off a half star because there were some parts where I felt like things were slightly dragging some- they picked up before I got too bored, but I would be remiss if I didn’t warn y’all about that. All in all, a very solid, very cute book that sets the scene for a very cute series!
