Book Review: Namesake by Adrienne Young

Ahhh y’all I finished the audiobook for Namesake and I have allllll the thoughts! I absolutely loved Fable last year (thank you Wednesday Books for letting me read an ARC of it!), so I tried to get an ARC of Namesake this year, and when I couldn’t, I grabbed the audiobook via scribd as soon as it came out and OMG it was so good!

Namesake 5/5 Stars

Here’s the summary of Namesake from Goodreads for you (and then we’re going to talk alllll about this book, so stop reading my review and go read Namesake instead if you don’t want any spoilers):

Audiobook ARC Review: The Lives of Saints by Leigh Bardugo

Thank you so much to Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for letting me listen to the audiobook version of The Lives of Saints by Leigh Bardugo (narrated by Ben Barnes and Lauren Fortgang) early! The print version of the book came out back in October I think, but the audiobook came out today and I really enjoyed learning about all of the saints and how they came to be saints/those they helped! This review is going to be a little different from my normal reviews (format wise) in that my whole review is going to be in this paragraph and then you’ll get my rating and the summary from Goodreads- I figured I should give y’all a heads up since it’s a little different from my normal. Initially, when I heard about The Lives of Saints, I didn’t think I was going to read it, because I didn’t think it was that important in my Grishaverse journey, but I’m really glad I listened to the audiobook version of it. Not only did I get acquainted with Ben Barnes’ voice (oh I am so excited to see him in the show!), but I also really appreciated hearing about where the saints came from and I feel like it really added to their characters, especially since we see them so much in King of Scars. The Lives of Saints is a quick, fun audiobook (it was less than 2 hours for me since I listened to it at 1.5x speed) and I definitely recommend it!

The Lives of Saints 5/5 Stars

Summary from Goodreads:

Dive into the epic world of international bestselling author Leigh Bardugo with this beautifully illustrated replica of The Lives of Saints, the Istorii Sankt’ya, featuring tales of saints drawn from the beloved novels and beyond. Out of the pages of the Shadow and Bone trilogy, from the hands of Alina Starkov to yours, the Istorii Sankt’ya is a magical keepsake from the Grishaverse.

These tales include miracles and martyrdoms from familiar saints like Sankta Lizabeta of the Roses and Sankt Ilya in Chains, to the strange and obscure stories of Sankta Ursula, Sankta Maradi, and the Starless Saint.

September Review and October TBR

Happy October y’all! October is such a great month- we start fall, the weather becomes beautiful, and Halloween!!! September, on the other hand, was not a great month for me- I had a two day work training, my business unit got re-organized out of no where, I had to get my wisdom teeth removed, and I had to take a week long business trip, so I definitely didn’t stick to my September TBR very well (mainly because I went on a crazy Christina Lauren kick at the end of the month)

Here are the books I read in September:

The Silvered Serpents – I  love, love, loved this book! I should be publishing a review for this one soon!

Crown of Feathers – I really enjoyed listening to this book and I can’t wait for book two.

Fireborne – Fireborne was definitely interesting and I should be publishing a review for this one soon too.

Five Dark Fates – I love these books and I definitely think that Five Dark Fates was better than Two Dark Reigns

Roomies – This book began my obsession with Christina Lauren’s books and her writing! SO GOOD

Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating – I really liked this book too- Christina Lauren is so good at creating fun characters

Dating You/Hating You – This book was so cool- I loved learning about talent agents and man, I love Carter and Evie!

My Favorite Half-Night Stand – I love books about ridiculously smart people who are super oblivious haha

Love and Other Words – this was probably the slowest Christina Lauren book I read, but it was still really good and I loved it for sure!

In October, I’d like to read:

Serpent and Dove – I’m listening to this right now and it’s so good!

Bloodwitch – I’ve been reading Bloodwitch for what feels like ever right now, but I’m liking it for sure.

Sensational – I loved Spectacle, so I’m super excited to read Sensational

Bid My Soul Farewell – I loved Give the Dark my Love, so Bid My Soul Farewell has been high on my list for a while. I started it when it came out, so I should hopefully be finishing it this month!

King of Scars – I feel like I’ve been reading King of Scars forever- not because I’m not enjoying it, but because other things seem to be carrying my attention more. I’m going to try and make it a priority to finish it this month though!

The Merciful Crow – The Merciful Crow is going to be my next audiobook as soon as I finish Serpent and Dove!

Sisters of Shadow and Light – I have an e-arc of this one from NetGalley right now, and since it comes out in early November, I’m going to read it and have my review done by the end of the month.

Twice in a Blue Moon – I was just accepted to review this one over on NetGalley and with my love of Christina Lauren books going strong, this is definitely going to be one of my first reads of the month.

Lair of Dreams – It’s FINALLY time for me to try and get to this book- especially since it’s fall and spooky and this book is so nice and creepy!

What are y’all reading this October?

Review: Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim

Ahhhh I follow Elizabeth Lim on Twitter and as soon as she announced Spin the Dawn (and pitched it as Project Runway meets Mulan), I was hooked. I entered all of the ARC giveaways and tried my luck at getting a copy via NetGalley to no avail, so when I saw that my library had purchased a copy and I could be the first person on the hold list, I jumped at the opportunity. When I checked out the book, I also checked out The Traitor’s Kingdom, so it definitely was in great company. Unfortunately, I hit a reading slump (which really was more of an influx of extra work at my real job and me finding a cycle studio that I’m obsessed with, both of which meant less time for reading) so I wasn’t able to finish the book before I had to return it to the library- BUT my subscription to Scribd came in clutch because they had the audiobook version of Spin the Dawn ready to go for me! Woop Woop!

August Wrap Up and September TBR

Man, August was not my best month reading wise (and I can’t even think of a reason for why!)- I only read 6 books in August. They were all pretty good though, so I can’t really complain. And ugh, September has not really been my month yet (which is why this wrap up and TBR post is 10 days late) – we’re 10 days into the month and I’ve only read 1 book!

Here’s what I read in August:

The Traitor’s Kingdom – Ahhh I’m obsessed with this series and I LOVED this book!!!!

The Kingdom – The concept of the Kingdom was so interesting and I really enjoyed reading it! I’m super excited for book 2!

Spin the Dawn – Ahhhh I loved this book! Be on the lookout for my review soon!

Gravemaidens – Gravemaidens was a really interesting book and a great debut for author Kelly Coon. Be on the lookout for my review closer to when the book comes out!

Vow of Thieves – I loved these books and this world and honestly everything about it- what a great end to this duology!

A Thousand Fires – This was a book that wasn’t on my radar until I saw it on NetGalley and requested it. It’s really different from other things I normally read, but I still really enjoyed it. Be on the lookout for a review closer to the release date.

Here’s what I want to read it September:

The Silvered Serpents – Technically, I’ve already finished this and it was SO GOOD!!!! I cannot wait for y’all to read it! I’ll be reviewing this one in the next few weeks or so!

Rage – Ahhhhh I loved Roar so much so I’m really looking forward to reading Rage!

Bloodwitch – I love the Witchlands books and I read Sightwitch a couple of months ago, so now I’m finally going to get to Bloodwitch.

King of Scars – Will this be the month I finally read King of Scars? Maybe!

Crown of Feathers – I’m listening to the audiobook of Crown of Feathers right now and it’s so good! I only have about 2 hours left, so woooo almost done!

Fireborne – I have an e-arc of this one from NetGalley, so I hope I’ll be able to read it this month.

Five Dark Fates – Ahhhh it’s finally time to get back to my favorite triplets! I can’t wait to see what this final installment has in store for us!

What all are y’all planning on reading in September?

July Wrap Up and August TBR

Man, July went by so fast and we’re already decently into August and I’m JUST writing up my wrap up and TBR post. What a mess. I also read far fewer books than I wanted to- I only read 8 books, and man, that seems like such a small number haha

In July, I read:

Immunity – SO GOOD! Read my review here.

Obsidio – Also SO GOOD!

One of us is Lying – Better than I was expecting, honestly!

Sightwitch – I listened to this as an audiobook and it was definitely an interesting experience (in the best way possible)

Sorcery of Thorns – I’m going to let my review speak for itself on this one

Kingsbane – ugh.

Don’t Want to Miss a Thing – I’ve been into rom-coms recently and this was such a cute book- definitely a fan

Tiger Queen – I read this one from NetGalley and I really liked it! Look for a review closer to when it comes out (so like early September)!

In August I’d like to read:

The Kingdom – I’m listening to this as an audiobook right now and I’m really enjoying it- I LOVED the first season of Westworld, so this concept is super cool to me

The Traitor’s Kingdom – technically I’ve already read this one, but I read it in August, so I’m counting it as this month [spoiler alert- it was so good!]

Gravemaidens – I got an e-arc of this book via NetGalley and I’m so excited to read it- I’ve heard great things!

Vow of Thieves –  OMG I loved Dance of Thieves, so Vow of Thieves has been really high on my list for a while

King of Scars – Maybe this’ll be the month I finally finish this book?

Fix her Up – My best friend read this book last month and said that I have to read it haha

Spin the Dawn – I started this from the library and I’m 184 pages in right now, but I have to return it to the library today, so time to pick up the audiobook (when I finish the kingdom)

Bloodwitch – I’ve been meaning to read this one since it came out, so maybe this month is the month I do it?

Lair of Dreams – I thought the Diviners was super interesting, so when book 4 was announced earlier this year, I figured that maybe it’s time for me to read books 2 and 3 soon too (read my review of the Diviners here)

What are y’all planning on reading in August/what did you read in July?

Review: Lady Smoke by Laura Sebastian

Hello friends! This month has been crazy with travel and work and life and I’ve had no time to write any blogs (well, let’s be real, I’ve started like four blogs, but I haven’t finished any of them and I wrote one for an ARC review, but I’m not planning on posting it until next week because the book doesn’t come out until June 11). I have been reading but reading doesn’t always translate well to reviewing haha

Let’s talk about a book I read (listened to actually) this month that I was very very meh about- Lady Smoke! I enjoyed Ash Princess and I finished reading (again, listening to) it in April, so I started Lady Smoke as soon as I finished Ash Princess- not a great decision…
